Not only are blueberries sweeter and tastier than many other berries but these berry fruits rarely cause allergies in infants. It’s always advisable to be wary of the signs of allergic reactions before giving blueberries to your little one too frequently or in large quantities.

While other berries (the strawberry, cranberry, blackberry and raspberry) can be harmful to infants under the age of 1, blueberries can be given to babies as early as their sixth month.

Blueberries also have richer antioxidant (Anthocyanin) content than their fellow berries. These are proven to fight cancer cells from forming.

This fruit also aids in urinary tract infections which frequently harm babies as well as containing vitamins B6 (for hair growth), C (for increased immunity against disease and infections), K (helping with clotting factors) and Manganese (a bone-building mineral).

Selecting and Storing Blueberries

When choosing blueberries, always look for the bright indigo colored ones with a firm and plump texture. Lighter colors mean the fruits are still unripe. The powdery white covering on them guarantees their tastiness. Soft and almost black-colored blueberries are already past their prime.

Blueberries can be stored in the refrigerator for as long as two weeks and should be covered with a plastic film or popped inside a tight plastic container. It is highly recommended not to wash the fruits if you don’t intend to eat them immediately after.

Blueberries can also be frozen. If you freeze them, it is imperative to wash them very lightly and quickly so as to preserve the freshness. Use air tight plastic bags to contain them. Be sure to dry blueberries thoroughly before placing them inside the bags and into the freezer. These berries will last frozen and fresh for up to 6 months.

1) Blueberry Combo

Ingredients


  • 1 cup apple (skin removed, chopped)
  • ½ cup blueberries (fresh)
  • ​½ cup carrots (fresh, minced)
  • 1 cup water (distilled)

Directions


  • Place all ingredients in a pan
  • Cover and simmer it for 10 minutes until carrots are soft
  • ​Remove ingredients from the pan, drain and set aside the liquid
  • ​Put all in a blender and make a puree
  • Add the set aside liquid and blend again until desired consistency is achieved
  • Pour onto a bowl and let it cool for a few minutes before serving to baby

2) Banana and Blueberry Puree

Ingredients


  • 1 banana (ripe, sliced)
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 1 cup distilled water

Directions


  • Place blueberries and water into a pan and cook for about 7 to10 minutes
  • Remove from the pan and bring it all along with the bananas into a blender
  • Blend until all are smooth and soft
  • Serve to baby

3) Mango and Blueberry Cereal

Ingredients


  • 1 mango (small, ripe and sliced)
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ​½ cup rice cereal (organic, pre-cooked)
  • 1 cup water (distilled)

Directions


  • Remove the mango from its skin then slice it thinly
  • Place sliced mango into the pan along with the blueberries and water
  • ​Simmer for about 10 minutes
  • ​Remove from the pan and mash everything in a bowl
  • Mix the mashed fruits with the cereal and serve

4) Blueberry Smoothie for Baby

Ingredients


  • ½ avocado (peeled)
  • 1 banana
  • ​½ cup blueberries
  • ​1 cup water (distilled)
  • ​1 cup milk (whole milk)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 4 ice cubes

Directions


  • Place all ingredients into a blender and make a puree on high speed until everything is turned into a smoothie
  • Serve immediately

5) Microwave Blueberry

Ingredients


  • ¼ cup blueberries (sliced in four parts)
  • 1 banana (mashed)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ​½ cup oatmeal
  • ¼ cup milk

Directions


  • Gently mash the banana
  • Add in oats, honey and milk then mix altogether
  • ​Lightly press the blueberries into the mix
  • ​Spread the mixture on an oil sprayed baking pan
  • ​Blast in the microwave for 5 minutes
  • Remove and enjoy eating with baby
  • Important Note: When using frozen blueberries remember not to thaw them before use. Simply place the frozen fruits into the refrigerator for a few hours as thawing will cause the fruit’s color to leak into the food.
